Who's got it better than us? NOBODY!

Everyone's ignored Alex Smith ever since Kaepernick went and took his job, yet no one might have done more to get the kid prepared than Smith. Chryst knows. He sees it in the meetings - those tiny cloistered sessions where it's just Chryst, Smith, Kaepernick and maybe two other quarterbacks. He's watched Smith push Kaepernick to be better. They study plays together, they identify defenses together. When Kaepernick is unsure of something, Smith is instantly there."I think Alex is wired that way too," Chryst said. Then he paused."No one wanted to win this game more than Alex," Chryst said. "It's who Alex is."He laughed."It's a unique gift that Alex has given to Colin," he said.

"We have a need for a lot of rushing yards every week," Roman said. "We'll take them every week. But who does it? It really doesn't matter to us. Who catches it? Doesn't matter to us, as long as we're getting production. So as far as Kap running the ball, it may happen. It may not. And we'll have to wait and see."

"Yeah, he got an opportunity, stepped up and made the most of it -- that's the deal," Smith said in front of his locker Wednesday. "I mean, that's how I got my start in college, it was no different. Guy in front of me got hurt, and that's how I got my first start. "So it'd be pretty hypocritical to be upset about it. It's just the nature of team sports." Let the record show that Utah incumbent starter Brett Elliott suffered a broken wrist in the first game of the Utes' 2003 season, and in stepped Smith -- who immediately beat Cal and Aaron Rodgers in Week 2, and never looked back. Smith went 21-1 in two years as a starter, turned into the No. 1 overall pick in 2005, and Elliott ended up transferring to Division II Linfield College. Sound a little familiar? Maybe that's why Smith has been so gracious about the switch to Kaepernick, which coach Jim Harbaugh insists was not preplanned and happened only because Smith suffered a concussion in the team's ninth game this season.

And I said, 'I hope that doesn't mean that they think I'm going to be gone.'" DeBartolo is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The class of 2013 will be announced the day before the Super Bowl. Things could not be a whole lot better, he said, as he repeatedly expressed his pride that the franchise has experienced a resurgence under the leadership of Jed York, his nephew.

The Validation (Jan 20, 2013): With Kaepernick replacing injured starter Alex Smith and playing well in his debut as an NFL starter in November, coach Jim Harbaugh made the controversial decision to stick with the second-year quarterback. When Kaepernick stayed cool and led San Francisco back from a 17-0 deficit at the Georgia Dome last Sunday, with the Niners prevailing 28-24 over the Falcons after a late defensive stand, Harbaugh’s decision was officially validated. And for the first time in 18 years, Niners fans are feeling Super.
