The New York Rangers won the Stanley cup in 1994 against the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks lost in the finals previously in the early 80's to another New York team, this time the Islanders. This is the series where people first started waving towels at a sporting event. The Canucks also lost in the finals against the Bruins a few years back. They can never seem to push it over the top but that Ranger team in 94 with Mark Messier was pretty good. That was Messier's sixth cup after winning 5 with the Oilers. This leads to another sequeway that in the 80's the two Alberta hockey teams, the Flames and the Oilers, were in the Stanley Cup Finals 8 consecutive years and won 6 of them. The Flames were in two Stanley cup Finals, both against the Montreal Canadiens with Patrick Roy, and they won the second one in 1989. I had moved to Alberta in 1980 from California and moved to Colorado in 1998 so it was a great time to watch hockey. My Lakers and 49ers also had a pretty good decade. 16 championships all told for these teams in basically one decade. Lots of celebrating.
