Andrew, trades are all about value. We only gave up a 6th to go up and get Carradine, and only a 7th to get MacDonald. What 7th rounder would be worth not getting MacDonald? We gave up a 3rd to get Reid, but even that was pretty cheap when you consider how far we moved up. Add to that the fact that we got a 3rd next year when we moved back 6 spots in the 2nd. Baalke has done a phenomenal job moving around.

We don't know what McDonald is worth and won't for a few years. Even if the 49ers are spot on in their evaluation, he could get hurt in training camp and never play a down. The draft has been studied, exhaustively, and the conclusion is that teams are largely comparable in their ability to evaluate, with luck being the biggest factor in year-to-year success. The draft is a lottery, and your best chance to win is to have more tickets. Add in the fact that, judging by draft slot value charts, the team trading up invariably has to overpay for the privilege (and this year was no exception; teams overpaid less this year, but still overpaid), and I will basically never support a trade-up philosophy. This year, the 49ers were in as good position for trading up as a team has ever been; Iget that. Still didn't like it. I like our draft. But unfortunately, we'll never know what it might have looked like had they stuck with the strategy that gives the best odds.
