Kevin,

I just visited a few mock drafts to see where Allen is projected, and most have him somewhere in the teens or twenties, positions that I don't think are out of reach of the 49ers. In one mock he's listed at #21, a slot the 49ers could easily swing with their #31 and #34 picks.

The most interesting mock I saw was on Bleacher Report, where he was projected at #32 to the Ravens with commentary to the effect that he could well be one of those players who tumble below their expected slot because he's been injured and unable to work out. The commentary also notes that he would be a good replacement for Anquan Boldin.

If he's good enough to be a replacement for Anquan Boldin, and he's 10 years younger, I want him on my team right away. Because even with Boldin on board, I still think this team needs a better #1 receiver than it has on the roster now.

And, speaking of wide receivers, I want to say to your observation about Gore's reduced receptions since Harbaugh arrived, Jack, that I think it is more related to a decision to upgrade the wide receiver corps and actually throw them the damn ball than to the arrival of hot back-up RB like Hunter. Whether drawing up more plays to wide receivers was caused by a decision to reduce Gore's touches out of consideration for his age or whether the drop in throws to the RB was caused by a decision to revive the 49ers' wide receiving offense (my preferred explanation), is hard to tell, but it's been for the better.

However, in spite of all the improvements so far under Harbaugh's regime, I still don't consider this 49ers offense one to be proud of as a fan the way I used to be proud of Bill Walsh's. That's why I think it's very important that Greg Roman (and probably means Harbaugh too) step up a level or two this season.

I want a 49ers offense I can be proud of. If a guy like Keenan Allen can help make that happen, let's go get him.
