Kevin,

Not to nitpick, but Earl Campbell is not confined to a wheelchair. He has difficulty walking and sometimes uses a wheelchair. He suffers from severe athritis in his knees, and debilitating back injuries. Are they all from football? Apparently he says no. From a story on him I found on Dallas News:

Campbell, however, said his physical condition is genetic.

"It's not because of football," Campbell said. "The most serious injury I got from football was a broken finger and broken ribs."

Nonetheless, some of these rules are getting ridiculous, and we are headed for 4 hour games here in the near future. All these guys know the risks, yet none of them are retiring early or turning down lucrative NFL careers completely, due to the risks. They can only put in so many intricate rules before they turn this into re-creating the wheel every Sunday. Seriously, as Arnold said, just cut through all the nonsense rule changes every year and lets go to leather helmets again. Back to the future. Then they can make sure nobody leads with their head on offense or defense. And I can't speak for everyone else, but of course, for me, it will open up my Sundays completely and keep me glued to the TVĀ on NCAA football Saturdays.
