With 14 draft picks, including at least five in the first three rounds, the 49ers will no doubt provide competition for Dahl. A source told The Chronicle that San Francisco has “spent plenty of time doing background” on LSU safety Eric Reid, who is projected as a second-round pick.

I think that Dahl was brought in to compete for the starting free safety position, but he's no shoe in for it, and will have to earn it.  His contract isn't very big, and we may see him more on special teams than in the starting lineup of the defense.  The article also points out that the 49ers have been doing a lot of research on LSU safety Eric Reid.

Personally I'd like to see Michael Huff and Nnamdi Ashumoaga brought in.  At 30 and 31 years old, they still have some years left, but most of all they bring experience to a young secondary.  Both have made the Pro Bowl while playing for a horrible Raiders team that hasnt made the playoffs in a decade.  Huff was a salary cap casuality while Nnamdi struggled with the Eagles for two seasons.  Many feel that Nnamdi's struggles are a result of playing in the wrong defensive system in Philly, and that everyone with the Eagles has struggled the last couple of years.  Philly became a bad place to be.
