Sentimentality or poignancy? I define them differently. Especially when used as plot devices in movies.

Let me think about this for a bit.

I will say that my favorite Christmas Movies are Yamazaki Takashi's "Always" series from Japan. The first came out in 2005, "Always: Sunset on Third Street". There have been 3 so far. They are as sentimental as it gets. They are set in the mid 1950s in a small lower middle class neighborhood in Tokyo. They are warm, human, wildly sentimental, and funny as all hell.

But because they are comic at their core, they don't end on the kick to the nuts note.
