Kevin and Jack,

I still believe Culliver can do better as a cornerback, but I can see why you might want to shift him to safety. A fan on another board made the excellent observation that what the 49ers desperately need is a true Free Safety who can range widely and provide solid pass coverage. At the moment, in Goldston and Whitner they really have two Strong Safeties, and that's not the kind of secondary you want in today's pass-happy league. If Goldston were to leave, keeping Whitner at SS and making Culliver the FS might make sense. The fan I'm referring to, however, felt that if SF manage to hold on to Goldston, they should consider letting Whitner (as good as he is and as much as he is liked) go, and replacing him with that true FS.

I'm seeing reports that the 49ers are interested in LaRon Landry. He's a clone of Goldston so he would be a good replacement. But the 49ers need to be thinking about improving the range and speed of their secondary overall.
