Rob, I don't think it's greed on the part of Goldson. He is apparently asking for a contract like Eric Weddle's. Now, what we don't know is what the 49ers are offering. How far apart are they? Players want/deserve to be paid in accordance with their value compared to others at the position and what their value is to the team. Remember the article we looked at in the middle of the season wondering if Goldson/Whitner is the best safety tandem to 49ers have ever had? A lot of people on this board said it was. So I don't think it's fair to say he's a greedy man. And especially guys in his position have great reason to be worried about injury. As a safety he's expected to attack the LOS and make tackles in the box. Safeties take a lot of punishment. I don't know if we can afford to keep him, but if he leaves it won't be greed but security against injury. If you notice, he's not couching what he has said in terms of the "have to be able to feed my family" crap a lot of players throw out there. He's talking security against injury, and I can respect that.

And remember, his first few years in the league he was not making the big money. He was a 4th rounder. Unlike the 1st rounders, he didn't make the 10s of millions right away. His first contract was for 2 million over 4 years. He then played one year for 2 million, and last year he had the franchise amount of 6.25 million. That last one is big-time money, but the problem with a lot of contracts is the guaranteed money. Now, that's a ton of money, but if I were in his position I would look at the difference between what I want and what I'm offered. Maybe he won't get the 40 million offer he wants, but if the 9ers are only offering 25 million (what they did a few years ago) that is a significant difference.
