Canuck

Interesting question. I think GT hit on it when he talked about Vernon's explosiveness and his pure speed. He's not a great open field runner, but he's fast, and he's a threat to go deep, and I think the coaches like that very much. So I wouldn't think they'd be that interested in seeing him have to maneuver through all the traffic that Delanie Walker deals with from the H or Full Back position. Not to mention... I think a lot of Walkers' opportunities come underneath when defenses shift to cover, or double cover Vernon. I'd hate to give up the space Vernon creates by taking off from the edge.

And again, I'm with GT when he says he really wants to see the team hold onto Walker. As different as they are as players, both Davis and Walker present very difficult coverage problems for defenses. And they compliment each other.

We have another guy as well. Garrett Celek, a former High School Left Tackle who transitioned to TE at Mich. St. He's 6'5" 255lbs., and the coaches have been raving about him lately. He was brought in as a blocking TE (a skill he excels at) but through the course of the season he started doing a much better job as a receiver. His size, power, technique and speed (he's not as fast as either Vernon or Delanie) are closer to most people's idea of what a Tight End should be. But I'd be surprised if he could do the things Delanie does from the back field.

Hmmm. Who could do the sort of things Delanie does, should we lose him? Nobody I can think of, if it's a question of just stepping in and taking over from day one.

Really interesting question.
