Rob, here are Mike Mayock's top 5 safeties:
1. Kenny Vaccaro, Texas
2. Matt Elam, Florida
3. Jonathan Cyprien, Florida International
4. Eric Reid, LSU
5. Shamarko Thomas, Syracuse

Mel Kipers top 5:
1. Kenny Vaccaro
2. Matt Elam*
3. Johnathan Cyprien
4. Eric Reid*
5. Earl Wolff, NC State

Scouts Inc. gives only Vacarro a 1st round grade. Elam and Cyprien a 2nd. Reid, Thomas, D.j. Swearinger (So. Carolina), Shawn Williams (UGA), and Bacarri Rambo (UGA), 3rds. They give Wolff a 5th round grade. I have seen a number of these guys play because they are in the SEC. Because Alabama is not an air-it-out kind of team, it isn't obvious always how good these guys are, but I like Reid a lot, was underwhelmed by Elam, and I like Rambo. But these are not schlubs.

Of course, my top pick of the safeties later is obviously an Alabama boy, Robert Lester. He is, however, a good player and mostly a free safety who picks ball off. I also like the fact that he will most likely be available in the 4th or 5th. So if we were choosing Reid in the 2nd or Lester in the 5th, I'd probably prefer Lester if we could get a really good player at another need position. Of course, my real preference would be to re-sign Goldson and draft Lester in the 5th. He would be an excellent back-up safety.
