This means we have 5 picks in the top 93 in this draft. Kawakami is reporting that the 2014 pick is a 3rd rounder that bumps up to a 2nd based on how the Chiefs perform. That is a remarkable bounty for a disposable asset and backup player (I don't say that to diminish Smith. Merely to quantify his value on the roster)

The way I see it we are likely going to let all of our free agents test the market. This draft is deep in safeties. With 5 picks in first three rounds Baalke can likely draft a long term replacement for Goldson or sign a vet off the market. Walker is a question mark. But one of the top TEs could be there at 31 or 34 or even late in the 2nd round.

From a long term perspective this sets up the niners to have a large pool of young, cost controlled players during the years when Kaep, Crabtree, Aldon and the Oline need to be resigned. That is a remarkable level of flexibility. Plus we already have at least an extra 3rd next year with the possibility that we can net more in draft day trades this April and net more compensatory picks of Goldson, Soap, Walker, RJF sign elsewhere,.

It seems like most front offices play checkers, while this one plays chess.

I hope we can get Goldson and Walker back at good contracts. I'd prefer they stay. But this trade also gives us the ammo to roll the dice on a difference maker like Revis or Harvin. I doubt that would happen -- would likely argue against it -- but after coming up 5 yards short I would understand the temptation to make a short term move like that to close the gap.

This is a good day for the 49ers. It is also a good day for Alex Smith. I hope he flourishes in KC. I want that second rounder
