for guys who enjoy watching 300-pound men in armor smash into each other at high speed we're being terribly delicate with our feelings, aren't we?

It's not so much delicacy as maturity.

Okay, it's the pretense of maturity.

I've been wondering about our secondary and I thought about Woodson for a while when the news first came out that he was gonna be cut. But he's 36, and he spent a lot of time injured last year... and I doubt he'd come cheap. He doesn't sound like a good bet to me.

But along the same lines... I've been wondering if the Eagles are going to release Nnamdi Asomugha. The guy got a huge contract from the Eagles two years ago, and to say it hasn't worked out as well as they'd hoped is a major understatement.

The thing to keep in mind, about Asomugha, is that he started 41 games at Cal as their Free Safety. Not Corner Back. He was taken in the first round, and it took him two seasons to earn a starting spot in Oakland as he tried to transition to Corner.

Asomugha is 31. Move him back to FS, tell him to play Center Field, and I think you've got something. (Whitner belongs down in the box, not in deep center field.)

Groundless daydreaming, of course. But as I think about our secondary it occurs to me that Goldson might be a big part of the problem.

Goldson has always been a favorite of mine, and I love watching him tackle guys. He's one of the few players who've figured out how to tackle within the new rules, while still delivering a big blow. And he's made his fair share of picks.

But I've been wondering if he's just gotten too aggressive. He wants to make the big hit close to the line of scrimmage. He wants to come down and grab a pick. When it's pretty obvious that the defense is set for him to be playing deep center field.

The defensive coaches know if he's been playing within the defense as called, or if he's been free lancing to the detriment of the defense. They know what play was called, and they can look at the film to see if he was the problem. And I expect we'll see the result of that Coaches Film Study when Goldson is either allowed to hit the Free Agent market, or is offered a big contract.
