GT, good line of speculation. I think there is something vicarious and subliminal for spectators. And maybe that's why the actual athletes and coaches make so much money living out in real contact the dangers and dramas that we simply enjoy safe and sound in comfort. Even ancient gladiators enjoyed their perks under far less refined circumstances. But it's probably directly connected to the origins of drama and ritual in significant ways as well. Archetypal expression and representation in socially acceptable guises with degrees of refinement and a range of forms that varies culturally and historically. Some may prefer opera, others wrestling. And the line starts to blur with the UFC stuff and beyond. But this is a discussion that can be dealt with in the off season in more depth.
