Kevin,

Classic. Puts it all into perspective.

This new breed of "read option" QB's, like Kap, Campbell and RG, although these guys can be scary in how athletic and how good they can run, really does add a level of liability to the team. That's why I always go for the pocket passers and if you happen to have a Quarterback that can improvise and run, it just adds an extra dimension. But you can't fool a 49er fan after we saw the Montana to Young transition and how the Hall of Fame opens its doors so readily to the Pocket QB and the Tebow types get laughed at and shown the door.

I've seen Kap on plays before where he throws a strategic block and thought what a neat and innovative play. But you cannot rely upon your QB being one of your play makers, except and only on certain exceptions, boot legs, Sneaks or the play just flat out breaks down, in which case if you can't get the sliding first down just throw the damn ball away.

You don't give those nasty defenses an opportunity to take out your QB, cause they will, and there's 32 nasty defenses out there. You keep your QB safe, but if you can fool the defense every so often - and they don't fool often - by all means, throw in some kind of athletic bootleg play, or worse, get him to block for you, assuming it works and secondly, you don't get your QB killed.

Putting him "out there" is fair game and no one will cry murder if a safety or linebacker slides on up and lays into him. Defenses know QB's are their biggest enemy. That's why they love sacks so much. So why wouldn't they take an honest shot at him if it's handed to them?

Option QB's are some times more trouble than they're worth. This is why I really hope the offensive brain trust on the 49ers go with a stronger emphasis on the power running game and secondly on the possession passing game, and leave the gimicky Wild Kap stuff for the occasional surprise play. Relying on your athletic quarterback is less efficient than having him dish it out to one of his team mates and its really, really risky to boot. Kap runs around and tries to be a hero? By all means, opposing defenses will nail him to the wall.

Football 101.
