Books written about the migrations of the Norse peoples of the first millennium tend to be rather dry but if you want an interesting tale to read on this subject there are many historical fiction books I have read about the post Roman Empire period about Western Europe, a few of these I will relate as Bernard Cornwell’s six book (there’s more to come apparently) series called “The Saxon Stories” about Alfred the Great and his wars against the Danes during the 9th century. The first book is called “The Last Kingdom”. I highly recommend this series of books if you want to know how the Saxons and Danes lived. Another is Michael Crichton’s “The Thirteenth Warrior” (also a movie with Antonio Banderas) based on his book called “Eaters of the Dead”. Like “Timeline” it’s a short roller coaster of a book, rich in well researched historical detail.

And if you are interested in Historical Fiction about the Roman Empire I also have many examples to offer, along with movies on the same subject.

Historical Fiction is the best, the Grand Daddy Author of this genre being James A. Michener.
