Yeah, those limeys always like to nickname everything and put that "er" at the end of the words like Rugby becoming Rugger, Association Football becoming Assoccer, later shortened to Soccer. Some Oxford bloke came up with the slang nickname somewhere around the Civil War and it stuck.

To me "Soccer" is a great sport and I love watching it live or on TV during the World Cup but no way Soccer competes with American Football, Basketball, Baseball or Hockey for attendance, revenue or fan appreciation over here in the Colonies. Who wants "Soccer" when you can have "Football"?

But since in other parts of the Americas it has caught on I guess we can go with FĂștbol and I know the rest of the world goes with Football when talking about Soccer, always having to refer to those dumb Americans still calling it Soccer, but to me its still Soccer, call it, or us, what you will.

On another note I really liked that movie, "Green Street Hooligans" with Elijah Wood after his Frodo days, talking about the "Firms" that surround most Association Football clubs in Britain. Very good movie.

Now back to our original banal topic, while we wait for the playoffs, as to why Football is called Football, when it clearly involves the hands, and its the Kickers who usually give the sport a bad name, not really even being athletes per se, I think that is also just one of those names that has stuck and we are stuck with it. Either way the sport evolved from Rugby Football at Harvard 150 years ago but parted ways with it after Walter Camp at Yale introduced "line of scrimmage" and the "down and distance" rule 50 years after that.

"Soccer" and "Rugger" are international sports but god knows we love our American Football so much more than any other sport the world can bring to our shores.
