I guess what I don't understand is when Akers started struggling and was injured, why have him keep kicking? Get someone in to give him a chance to heal. Then either permanently make the change or bring him back, but don't put a guy back there who can't rotate properly. The missed 50+ yarders are not the issue. Yes, he missed a game-winner, but 50+ is not automatic for any kicker. It's the 40-49 ones that are key. If you can't score some points when you get inside the 30, that's a big win for the defense. It's about an extra 10 yards they don't have to worry about. NFL kickers really need to be pretty automatic once their team gets to the 25. That's a 42 yarder. Leg strength is not an issue at that distance. Trajectory isn't an issue. It's simply kicking straight. And Akers has been missing those kicks in the low to mid-40s.
