MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY

Hmm. Niners stank in Seattle.

Interesting to see just how important Justin Smith is to our defense. Takes on at lest two guys on each play... stops the run... opens the door so that Aldon can get his sacks, or pressure the QBs... keeps Willis and Bowman clean... shortens the time our DBs have to cover. Not the guy I wanted to see injured and out.

I was thinking about our defenses in the past and I was reminded of George Seifert's penchant for stocking and over stocking the Defensive Line. He was a defensive coach, after all, but I took a look at his two Superbowl rosters, and it wasn't my memory playing tricks on me.

In 1989 we ran a 3 - 4 Defense:

Michael Carter - Nose Tackle

Jim Burt - Nose Tackle

Pete Kugler - Nose Tackle

Kevin Fagan - RDE

Pierce Holt - LDE

Larry Roberts - LDE

Daniel Stubbs - RDE

Charles Haley - Elephant *LB/DE*

Rollin Putzier - DT

Kevin Lilly - DT

10 guys - who rotated throughout the game - playing on the line. Three top of the line Nose Tackles.

In 1994 we were playing a 4 - 3 defense, so the list is even longer:

Bryant Young

Dana Stubblefield

Dennis Brown

Rhett Hall

Charles Mann

Mark Thomas

Artie Smith

Martin Harrison

Todd Kelly

Troy Wilson

Rickey Freakin' Jackson (semi LB / DE / Monster combo)

Richard I was too on the team, and I deserve a ring Dent.

George sure did like to rotate his big guys.

Maybe the Niners should give George a call when the season ends?

Oh, and since it's Christmas... Jake Long, OLT, Miami. Long is on the injured list right now because he tore a triceps muscle. And it looks very much like the Dolphins are going to let him become a Free Agent when the season ends. He makes too much money for the Dolphins taste, and the Dolphins are moving to a zone blocking scheme. Long fits way better in the Niner blocking scheme than he does the zone scheme, and everyone knows it.

He'll be expensive... but he's like Peyton Manning last summer. If he's available you owe it to the team to try to get him.

It's a shame Alex Mack (Center, Browns) won't hit the free agent market until 2014... but even in daydreams you can't have everything.

Yup. I want to see our O-Line reworked. Staley is good. Long is better. Much better. And I'm getting tired of seeing Anthony Davis either standing around watching people run by or around him... or watching him being drawn into stupid fights.

OH, and a Christmas note to Greg Roman: Last I checked, Frank Gore is not dead. Try calling his name once in a while and see if he answers!
